Extract from Nine Years of Silver, repeated in blog post

They called it mining, what those men did to Quinn’s daddy. Like he’d been a seam they longed to follow to the source and from there pluck riches like they thought they deserved. But Quinn’s people weren’t from the land and all those bastards mined from Quinn’s daddy was darkness, releasing it from the cage of flesh and blood and bone where it had been residing peaceably for Quinn’s two-and-twenty years.

Area Men and Monsterboys: Love Has Claws

Area Men and Monsterboys: Love Has Claws

In the spirit of a new year, I’m trying something new—self publishing! Over the course of 2019, I plan to release three novellas in the Love Has Claws series. Love Has Claws stories are loosely connected by a strange town called Lastings, but each can stand alone. Each story has a queer couple at the centre, some already acquainted, some meeting each other for the first time. HEA guaranteed!

I mean. Eventually.

Okay, so that’s the ‘love’ covered—what’s with the claws?

‘Claws’ are why I’ve been calling this the ‘area man and monsterboy’ trilogy on twitter. Each story features a different paranormal creature, as that’s what I love writing; I enjoy exploring the possibility of different forms, the way their lives might resemble our own (or very much not!), and also I think they’re neat. This time, though, I wanted to try writing outside my usual beloved werewolves.

So what kind of creatures can we expect to see in Love Has Claws? Can anyone say ‘selkie’? Vampire? Merpeople?

I really hope you enjoy the stories as much as I enjoy writing them!

Cover of Nine Years of Silver

Briar Augustin, a bounty hunter, returns to his hometown on the trail of a killer. There he becomes once more entangled with his first love, Quinn Lawrence, who is as integral to Briar’s hunt as he is to the mythology of Lastings. Can Briar find his bounty and return to the city, resisting the call of the sea? Or will he be drawn back into Lastings’ secrets—and the arms of Quinn Lawrence?

Lastings: Where some things can only be mined out.

NINE YEARS OF SILVER, a queer speculative novella, will be released April 2019.

Looking ahead to 2019

Looking ahead to 2019

In 2018, I had quite a few wins! I was able to share the adventures of West and Julian in MAGE OF INCONVENIENCE, my first novel (!), and the (mis)adventures of Wynfield and Yeven in RED BETWEEN THE LINES. I’ve had awesome feedback for both of those stories, especially for my favourite grumpy cyborg Wynfield <3 who would blush if he knew.

For these stories, I got to work with NineStar Press for the first – but hopefully not last! – time, and the Dreamspinner Press team again. I also signed with DSP for HART OF WINTER, which I’m super excited to share with you when the time comes – though likely not until winter next year! Shifters, snowsports, and snuggling… but I shouldn’t say more.

River Song (Doctor Who): 'Spoilers.'

(But … if I was saying anything, I’d say it on twitter.)

On the other hand, I’d planned a lot of other stories for 2018 that 2018 got in the way of, tbh. That’s a little disappointing, but I’m hopeful to turn things around in 2019. There’s a lot of stories I want to tell! More shifters, of course, and kissing, and explosions … maybe a few familiar faces… but also vampires and westerns and zombies – we’re definitely staying fantastical for the foreseeable 😀 I like it here. I hope you do, too, and I hope you’ll come along on the adventures with me – you’re definitely invited!

Best of all things for 2019, folx – see you there!
